Memories With HIC

As an ice cream company, we like to believe that we provide more than just a dessert product. We want to make memories, bring people together, and create moments that last a lifetime. Here’s a submitted story by a girl who let us know we are doing just that.

“I grew up in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. There isn’t a whole lot going on around that tiny little town. There are plenty of farms, hay fields, and horse barns. It’s a quiet town but I wouldn’t have wanted to grow up anywhere else. My memories of summer nights include bike rides and long hikes throughout the countryside. But there is one memory that I have always cherished that I wanted to share.

Family Riding Bikes My summer days usually consisted of playing in the creek behind our house, swinging on the rope tied to our Oak tree, and playing “pretend” in the backyard with my neighbor friend. But I will never forget Friday nights. My whole family (Dad, Mom, Brother, and Sister) would get on our Bikes and go for a three mile trip to a little store called L.H. Gross Manorette or what we liked to call Gross’s. They always had a stocked freezer of Hershey’s® Ice Cream! Half Gallons, Pints, and all my favorite treats (including the P. Nutty which was my favorite!) We’d park our bikes and all walk in, heading directly to the (what I called) ‘pot of gold’ , the ice cream freezer. There were always so many delicious choices it usually took us a good ten minutes to all decide what we wanted. Then after checking out, we’d go to the single table outside and enjoy our summer treat. After some good laughs (sometimes laughing so hard we spit ice cream all over each other) and finishing every bite of our ice cream, we would get back on our bikes and make the three mile trip back home. It was usually pretty dark by the time we got home and time for bed. So I’d go to sleep with a smile on my face and a tummy full of delicious ice cream!

I don’t get to spend as much time with my family these days, and so that is a memory I will always cherish and keep in my heart. Thank you so much for being a part of my childhood Hershey’s® Ice Cream! Every time I bite into a P. Nutty Cone, I’m brought back to those wonderful Summer Friday nights.”

  1. I too grew up in the Lewisberry area and live there once again. Gross’s still carries Hershey’s ice cream and even orders in my favorite pint, Butter Pecan, no sugar added. My husband and I drive to Liverpool for Hershey’s soft serve. Hershey’s ice cream is the best!
