Love is in the Air

Chocolate Truffle With a Card Saying I Love You February 14th, the day St. Valentine declared a day of love. A day where Cupid comes out from his yearly hiding and aims his arrow at someone’s heart so they fall in love. Where they then spend a tremendous amount of money on cards, candy, jewelry, and big fluffy stuffed animals. It’s a day where we show our appreciation to the one we love. But why only February 14th?

It’s great that we have a day dedicated to showing the one we love that we care by going above and beyond, but shouldn’t we celebrate our love 365 days (366 on Leap Years) a year? Now this doesn’t mean you have to go buy them a heart shaped box of assorted chocolates and a bag of chalky candy hearts that say “Be Mine” on them every day. But we should always take the opportunity to express our love every chance we get. Think beyond the cliche Valentine gifts, and show them how special they are.

Grandma & grandson making Valentines Another common misconception is  that Valentines day is only for those in romantic relationships. When really it’s a day to show everyone we love just how much they mean to us. It might be a little awkward if you send them all a dozen roses and heart-shaped chocolates, but you can find your own way to show them how much you care. Valentines Day is meant for love in all different kinds of relationships,  so everyone should celebrate!

How will you celebrate Valentines Day this year? And how will you show those who love how much they mean to you?

A Scoop A Day Keeps the Doctor Away

We’ve all heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But the truth is, you need a lot more nutrition in your diet than just an apple. Yes ice cream is considered a dessert, but it also can have many health benefits! Here are a few…

As most of us know, ice cream is packed with the nutrient powerhouse calcium! According to the Resource Library of The CBS Interactive Business Network, “Calcium helps control blood pressure, reduces the risk of colon cancer, puts a damper on PMS, and may lower the chances of developing kidney stones. And while it does your body good, it’s also doing good for your figure by helping you lose weight, shed belly fat and maintain your weight loss.” In moderation.

Weight-loss Smoothie

Ice Cream can be a little heavy on the sugar and saturated fat, but there are other options such as no fat frozen yogurt. It has the same calcium punch as ice cream (without the added calories). You can substitute it in your milkshakes or try it in one of our Tropi-kool® Smoothies. If you are trying to lose a few pounds, you need energy to be able to exercise. Why not enjoy it in a delicious way? Plus, according to Michael Zemel, Ph.D., head of the department of nutrition at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, calcium is needed to not only help in weight loss, but keep the weight off for good.

The nutrition itself is not the only health benefit ice cream or frozen yogurt can provide. It can help the mental health too! Think about those long stressful days you’ve had, and how coming home to a bowl of ice cream, and family members to share it with, has made everything worthwhile. Ice cream can be needed for the soul, not just the body.

So this year, stay healthy in both mind and body.  What other benefits do you enjoy with ice cream or frozen yogurt?

Sensory Ice Cream Testing

Have you ever wondered how to truly test the quality of your ice cream? What makes some ice cream better than others? Are you getting what you paid for? How can you have the best ice cream experience possible? It’s all about the different sensory tests, and we perform them here at Hershey’s® Ice Cream. Do you want to learn how you can be your own ice cream evaluator? Follow these sensory tests and learn how!

Judging ice cream is performed by use of the senses of sight, taste, touch, and smell.

Sight Cookies N' Cream Pint
When you first open the ice cream container, look at the distribution of any add-ins that are incorporated such as nuts, fruits, syrups, candies, etc. You want to make sure there is no “irregular distribution.” A good distribution means a quality flavor in every spoonful. Last, you want to take a look at how the ice cream is packaged. Make sure your container is properly filled with the amount of ice cream you paid for!

Taste
There are two components to the flavor characteristic – taste and aroma. Taste includes the sweet, salty, sour, and bitter characters, each of which is perceived at different locations on the tongue. Aroma, which is perceived in the nose, includes all other elements of flavor. It is the aromatic properties that identify flavor. Here are a few descriptive terms that will help you when describing flavor.

Woman eating ice cream Lacks Fine Flavor – Describes a flavor that, while pleasing, falls short of the perceiver’s concept of perfection.
Sweetness Level – The reference point for establishing whether a product lacks or is too high in the level of either flavoring or sweetness is the intensity standard that has been established within the company for that flavor.
Harsh –  Describes a situation where the flavor very rapidly rises to a peak, and is perceived to have an unpleasant sharpness.
Lacks Freshness – Degrees of an unpleasant stale character that develops during the storage of concentrated dairy products.

Touch
Touch is broken down into two categories – Body and Texture.

The term “body” is a reflection of the overall structure of the product.  Here are a few terms to describe the body of your ice cream.

Weak – Ice cream lacks substance and offers little resistance to manipulation in the mouth.
Gummy – This is the opposite of weak. It is a character in which the product may string out when dipped, and feels sticky in the mouth, almost like you ate a gum drop.
Crumbly – This characteristic is best observed in the dipping or spooning process. In crumbly ice cream, the structure breaks apart readily when it is dipped, making it difficult to remove portions without small pieces falling off.
Fluffy – is a light, marshmallowy character.
Soggy – identifies a heavy, dense character.

The term “texture” refers to the relative smoothness of the ice cream perceived during the process of manipulating a portion of the ice cream in the mouth. This characteristic is directly related to the size of “crystalline material” present. Here are some terms to test the texture of your ice cream.

Coarse or Icy – These two terms are used to describe a lack of smoothness produced by the growth of ice crystals to a size just big enough to recognize. The degree of roughness is what makes the “course” or “icy” character.
Sandy – This term is used to describe a rough texture that is caused from ice crystals. Also referred to as “gritty.”
Greasy – This term is used to refer to a condition where a film of milk fat is perceived in the mouth or on the lips as the ice cream is being eaten. This results from the presence of large agglomerates of fat that have developed under the rapid agitation that is applied during the whipping and freezing process.

Smell
Smell is the least used when it comes to judging ice cream quality. However, it directly correlates to aroma (as previously mentioned). If the ice cream is not fresh, your nose can let you know before you take your first taste!

Here at Hershey’s® Ice Cream, we test all of our products to make sure we are only serving you the highest quality ice cream you can find! But don’t take it from us. Test it yourself!

Imagination

A woman floating in the air with balloons How often do you use your imagination? It’s a wonderful magical thing – the stuff dreams are made of! So why don’t adults use it more? Maturity really takes a toll, the stress of life gets a hold of you and bills/deadlines and other “adult” things consume your life, but nothing can ever take away your ability to dream.

We all remember at least one special memory from the world of childhood. Maybe it was an entire house made out of cotton candy, or a tree house that was a castle, or maybe a bicycle that was a dragster. Whatever it was, you made it your own. You imagined something and it became real. The world is at your fingertips! With just a little imagination you could travel around the world and make your dreams come true without ever leaving home.

A fantasy castle made of clouds Lets be kids again, just for a little while. Here at Hershey’s® Ice Cream, we’ve decided that it’s not actually raining outside right now. We’ve imagined it’s cloudy with a chance of ice cream! It’s snowing our favorite flavor! How awesome would it be to stick a cone out of the door and have it fill up with whatever flavor you wanted?!!!!

So young or old, jump on the imagination train right now and let go.  If you want to, share your journey with us!

The NFL Ticket

Well it’s that time of year again when we get out our jerseys and root our NFL team on their journey to the Super Bowl. But what about all of us who’s team didn’t make it this year?

Four Men Watching a Football Game on Television Yes, it would have been nice for the excitement of seeing your team reach the top and come out in victory, but isn’t it a bit stressful? Always having that week-long tension of anticipation for Sunday’s game. Smack talk from fans of the other team, and then there’s that last minute field goal to win by one. It’s enough to make you need anxiety medication!

So we would all agree that by choice, we’d want our team to keep going, but when they don’t, isn’t nice to be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the playoff season? We aren’t saying you have to be glad they are out, just that it might be nice to finally be able to relax!

Who’s your team? Or if your team is done for the season, who do you want to see win…or lose?

Missing Summertime…

Remember those warm days? Feet in the sand, sunglasses on, refreshing milkshake or smoothie in hand? Summer is such a wonderful time! The sun is shining and everyone wants to soak up the rays. The only problem is it doesn’t last all year.

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, we could say that the blistering winds and subfreezing temperatures of Winter make us appreciate the Summer months more… But we’re ready to put away our Eskimo gear and break out the bathing suits!

We all have different ways to help us get through the Winter. Maybe you put on some Bob Marley, sit back and picture yourself with your feet deep in the sand, staring into clear blue water. Maybe you ignore the ice warnings and go for a drive with the windows down (bundled up in a stadium jacket, scarf, and gloves!). Just imagine, you’re on a tropical island, the hot sun and the cool water. You reach for a cool drink as the palm trees sway in the background… Then open your eyes to 2 feet of snow outside, your pipes are frozen, and you haven’t been able to feel your toes since October.

Yeah, we’ve all been there. Tell us how you survive the cold Winter months?

Year of the Green Cow

The HIC Green Cow 2012 is the year of the Green Cow. No, not because of Chinese Astrology! It’s because here at Hershey’s® we’re always thinking about you. We’re proud to be an American family-owned company, and we know that our employees are our greatest asset. So we focus on working with other American companies which help generate new U.S. jobs as well as stimulate local economies (which is bound to bring a few real smiles)!

We want to build a better environment for tomorrow, filled with opportunities and delicious ice cream! That’s why we’ve been paving the way for the “green” movement for years. We’re not jumping on the bandwagon, we’ve been helping to drive it.

Long before it was the “in thing” to reduce, reuse, and recycle, we implemented methods of recycling used materials and selling reusable goods to local businesses. We have also taken steps to minimize our carbon footprint, and are constantly researching and applying new ideas. Investing in our own pre-treatment system purifies waste from our plant before it enters the city septic line, and owning and operating our own fleet of delivery trucks reduces emissions in many ways . These are just a few of the many energy saving tools we utilize every day!

So next time you think about the future, remember that it’s bright because we care! The year of the Green Cow is here, and your favorite ice cream company is always working for you and your world.
